The main objective of edible oil refining is to make the oil fit for human consumption as vegetable oil is the main source of human consumption.
Crude oil which comes from expeller, solvent extraction plants contains unrequired components such as metal traces, FFA Free Fatty Acids ,Phosphatides, vitamins, glycosides, mono and di glycerides, hydrocarbons etc. These unwanted components will be removed in the process of Oil refining.
Degumming
Degumming is the pretreatment oil process for Chemical or physical refining. This process involves removal of phosphatides also called gums. In Degumming process some amount of water is added for the removal hydratable gums ,these hydated gums are separated by the medium of centrifugal Seaparator. The non hydratable gums are treated with concentrated phosphoric acid. The non hydratable gums are removed along with Neutralization.
Neutralization
During this process, the caustic soda is added to concentrated oil by this FFA got neutralized converting FFA into soap. The oil will further goes to Centrifugal separator for the separation of oil and soap. The non hydratable gums and some metal traces got separated under this process.
Bleaching
Bleaching process involves the removal of contents received from neutralized oil such as color, phosphatides, oxidation, soap, metal traces by adding bleaching earth under vaccum at certain temperature with maximum retention time. The bleached oil is then filtered in pressure leaf filter and the polish filters.
Dewaxing/ Winterization
Dewaxing is thr process to separate saturated glycerides or waxes from oil. Some oil contains wax such as Sunflower, cotton seed, Rice brain and Corn oil. Under this process the oil is cooled at certain temperature by which wax converts into slurry and the oil remain as it is. Crystalizer are designed in such a way to bring first crystals into contact with more oil to make bigger crystals. After this the oil is filtered in plate and frame type filters or PLF to separate crystalized waxes from the oil.
Deodorization
Deodorization is a steam-distillation process to remove free fatty acids and volatile components present in crude edible oil at this stage of processing. These unwanted substances negatively affect the odour, flavour, colour and stability of the final product.
